Fine and rare, 18K gold hunting case pocket watch wound by closing the front cover with special setting arrangement and daguerreotype portrait. In 1873 Benjamin Haas patented an intersting winding mechanism (English patent no. 3945 of Dec 2 1873). The idea was to utilize the energy generated when closing the front cover to wind the watch. It was quite a succesful desgin, and Haas employed it in some of his best watches, mostly those with complications. This watch was made for a well known New York retailer, Louis Strasburger & Co., which featured Haas watches. At the time it was run by Louis's son Byron, who ordered the watch for his personal use, had his name placed on the dial instead of hour numerals, and had his and his wife's daguerreotype portraits placed on the cuvette. Functions: Cover-winding, hours, minutes, small seconds. Signed: Dial by Strasburger. References: "New York Jewelers of a Half Century ago", 77K; Jewelers Circular Weekly Feb 5 1919 (Jewelers).
